FLV Flash vs MP4 H.264 Formats

Last Updated: Nov 17, 2014 02:03PM PST
Both H.264 and FLV file formats will produce good quality video. However there are some differences that will be critical for certain usage.

FLV with the On2 VP6 codec is a great quality codec and the highest quality version of the FLV file format.  VP6  video is less processor intensive so if you know you will be trying to play back videos on computers that are more than seven years old, flash may be the choice for you.

However, FLV videos are not able to be played on Apple mobile devices as FLV files cannot be played by QuickTime player on an iOS device.

MP4 H.264 video is very quickly becoming the most common form of video played on the web and is one of the standards for the next generation of online video. Compatibility issues with desktop computers is largely in the past.

H.264 videos are iPod and iPad compatible because the MP4 format can be  played back in iOS devices so MP4 with H.264 codec is the only option  for iPod/iPad playback in 360.

Also note that videos already encoded in the FLV format cannot be uploaded using the 360 browser uploader, but H.264 MP4 videos can be uploaded directly.
