Enabling Legacy Codecs in QuickTime Player

To access "legacy" codecs in QuickTime, such as Sorenson Video 3, please follow these steps below:

PC
  • Open QuickTime
  • Click on the "Edit" menu > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences
  • Go to the "Advanced" tab
  • Check the box under "Media Encoding" labeled "Enable encoding using legacy codecs"
  • Click on "OK" to save

Mac
  • The easiest solution is to download and install QuickTime 7 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
You can also enable SorensonVideo3 by using a Terminal command
  • Open a Terminal window Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  • Type: qtdefaults write LegacyVideoCodecs SorensonVideo3 enabled
  • Press enter and you will get a message stating "SorensonVideo3 has been enabled"
  • Note: You must type this for each codec you want enabled.
  • You can get a list of legacy codecs by typing: qtdefaults read InstalledLegacyVideoCodecs and press Enter
